I followed children with leukemia throughout their entire treatment and observed how they and their parents reacted to painful medical procedures. We found that some children and parents deal very well with these procedures, while others find them extremely difficult and do not know what to do. This study was very rewarding and I learned a lot from the families that participated. We are now able to help the families better who find these procedures difficult!

I’ve not done this myself but I quite like the marshmallow test but that could be because I like marshmallows! The results were quite interesting though – children were given an option to eat one marshmallow now or to wait (with the marshmallow in front of them and no-one else in the room) and be given another marshmallow later. This is called “delayed gratification” and is related to lots of things in life – the scientists followed the children up and found that the ones who were willing to wait did better in school
